グ(口径蝕)と呼ぶ(図5)。中央から見ると図左のように円形に見える開口が、斜めから
見る場合に斜めから見る場合に一部が蹴られて見える。この場合、ビグネッッティングはレ
ンズの最前面と最後面の径により起きていることが光路図から分かる。

3. 主光線
1物点から出発して開口絞り前面に満ち、1像点に収束する光束内の無数の光線の内、
開口絞りの中心を通過する光線は、これら光線の代表として主光線(chief ray)と呼ばれる
(図3B)。光線追跡により光学系の性能評価をする場合には、点光源の数だけ主光線が存
在することになる。像面上での横収差も便宜的に、この主光線の像面到達位置からのズレで
表現される。光束全体が大体どのような方向を向いているかの指標にもこの主光線の角度
が用いられる。
この定義は一般的なもので、光学設計の教科書等に倣うものであるが、光学系によって
は上記ビグネッティングが甚だしい場合もあり(そもそも開口絞り中心を通る光線が存在
しない時すらある。)、そうした場合には開口絞りの光線通過範囲の真ん中の光線を、あるい
は開口絞り面における光線通過領域の重心を通る光線を主光線として選択するする場合も
ある。光束全体の方向を問題にする場合にはこちらの方が適当である。
図1、図4におけるレンズには顕著なビグネッティングが起きているが(青い光線、赤
い光線)、青い光束に注目すると、絞り中央を通過する主光線は実は光束の偏った位置を通
過していることが分かる。
