入射座標①の光線は像面座標上①に到着する②は②に、という具合である。座標原点 0 は主
光線の位置で有り、像面上そこからの距離が横収差と成る。入射座標上①③の光線は像面上
までメリディオナル断面内に存在して像面上点 P から0までの収差をメリディオナルコマ、
これに対し入射座標上②④の光線は P’に達し、メリディオナル面に直交する面内に光線は
存在することになる。P’から 0 の横収差をサジタルコマと呼ぶ。図5の収差図形の円の 2
本の共通接線の為す角が常に 60 度で有ることを考えると、P’から 0 までの距離をrとす
れば P から 0 までの距離は 3r になり、コマ収差に関しては、常にメリディオナルコマはサ
ジタルコマの 3 倍の大きさになっていることが分かる。
コマ収差というものは、画面中心ではなく光軸から外れた周辺で発生するものである。従
って、軸上からの点像、或いは光軸に沿った平行ビーム等を結像の対象とする光学系の場合
には考慮しなくても良い様にも思われるが、実際には光学系には製造上の誤差による傾き
も存在し、少なからずいくらかの画角が発生する(図7)。従って、この様な場合にも画面
中心付近のコマ収差についての考慮が必要になる。
