<メリディオナル断面とサジタル断面>
前回はコマ収差について説明させて頂いたが、今回はこうした収差を解析する上で基
本的な座標系となる互いに直交する、光学系の二つの断面についても説明させていただき
たい。
1. メリディオナル断面
これまで通り回転対称な形状のレンズ、鏡などがそれらの回転対称軸を共通に存在し
ているとする。途中で外にはみ出してしまわない限り、その中を光線は自由に入射できる。
3次元空間に光線が広がっている訳である。光学系のパフォーマンスの理解のためには、そ
れら気ままに入射する光線たちを入射位置によって整理する必要がある。例えばこれまで
に登場した球面収差を考える場合には、光学系が光軸に対して回転対称であり、かつまた、
唯一の点光源が光軸上に存在するわけであるから、全系は回転対称となり、光軸を含む光学
系全体を切る様な大きな平面内の光線の挙動を考えれば良いことになる。スネルの屈折・反
射則によると、入射平面内に入射した光線は屈折反射後もその面内に留まるからである。そ
うした平面は光軸を中心にいくらでも定義できるわけであり、もしある光線が一つの平面
に属さない場合でも、その平面を光軸中心に回転させて、その光線(入射点と光源)を含む
ようにしてやれば、光軸に対して同じ角度で光源から射出し、入射面上の入射位置の光軸か
らの距離が同じ光線は、この評価面の角度を適当にとれば、全て同じ意味を持つ光線となる
(図1)。こうした光軸を含む光学系の切り口を子午面、メリディオナル面(あるいは断面)
と呼ぶ。地球の赤道に直交する両極を結ぶ大円の円周は子午線(meridian)と呼ばれる。
